6 Ideas for Choosing an Area Rug for Your Home

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

With so many choices in the types of area rugs that one can buy, how can you decide which one will work best for you? If you need help choosing, the ideas in this article will help you make the right decision when choosing a rug for the home.

Before even starting on the decision making aspect of choosing a rug you must determine the amount of traffic the location of the rug will get.

An ideal type of rug for a high-traffic area is one of high quality and durability. If the area gets low-traffic, then style and taste can be more of your focus and instead of the quality or make of the rug.

Make sure to decide on whether the rug is going to be the focal point or not. If the rug is going to be the focal point of the room, choose a rug that has a design or pattern on it in order to call attention. Conversely, choose a rug with a plain color or a simple design if your area rug is simply going to be in the background.

Having pets or children means having to take other things into consideration. If pets decide to make the rug their home they can do some real damage to it. Pets and children mean that you should probably think about stain resistant rugs.

Make sure to determine your budget before you even begin the process of shopping for a rug. You don’t want to overspend on an area rug, especially when they come in a variety of prices. Depending on the type of rug you want, or the quality of the rug, you can be set back anywhere from fifty to a few thousand dollars.

You should think about choosing a synthetic rug if you are on a tighter budget. You can tell if an area rug is synthetic by looking at the back of the rug. If the fibers are punched through like a carpet instead of hand-knotted then the rug is synthetic.

Synthetic rugs won’t last as long as wool rugs however, they are a great deal less expensive. If you need to replace your rugs every other year, you can do so, and have a new style, without having to spend too much money.

Determining how large the rug will be is important, and you should make sure to leave room between the rug and walls. The last thing you want is an area rug that extends right room’s walls. Instead, you should have an even border between the rug and the wall on all sides.

A great example is a rug under the dining table, measure up to an additional 4-5 inches out from the table on every side. By doing this you will ensure that you have enough room for your chairs and you’ll keep an even border around the walls too.

As long as you know what to look for and, how to pick out the perfect rug for your home,  an area rug can really be a great addition to your home.

House Cleaning Tips

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

If you are similar to me , you likely check around your home toward the end of your tiring day chasing children around and wonder when you will ever have the time to clean, I mean really clean your house .  With such an event filled schedule, I seldom have time to really get any good home cleaning finished during the day.  However , I have come across several quick tricks along the way to keep me on top of my cleaning efforts, even in between taking my kids to their various events .

Here are some great cleaning tricks for busy people in a rush :

  1. If you own a dark colored couch and a pet with light colored hair and want to get the hair off fast , then take a roll of packing tape and place it around your hand and rub until the hair is gone .  This also does wonders  for a dark colored area rug.
  2. If you have company coming to visit and need to clean your toilet, drop two Alka Seltzer tablets in the toilet .   Leave the tablets for a several minutes until they dissolve , give the toilet a fast clean with the toilet brush and you are done!
  3. Keep some denture tablets in your kitchen and when your sink is starting to look dirty from soap and use, fill the sink with warm water and drop 7-10 tablets in the water.  Let them dissolve and sit for thirty minutes .  Then rinse the sink with water , and you should have a clean sink .
  4. Quickly improve the look of your bedroom by making your bed right when you get up in the morning.  Don’t wait until after your shower or after breakfast.
  5. Baby wipes are great, quick cleaning rags .  Use them to spot clean your counter or a spot of baby food from the floor.
  6. To remove crayon from your walls rub a little bit of Colgate toothpaste on the wall with a lightly wet sponge.  Be sure to rub carefully so the paint does not come off the wall.
  7. If you are out of paper towels and have company visiting and need to wipe some fingerprints off a glass door , take the newspaper and dip in vinegar.  Wipe the vinegar on the glass and rub until almost dry.  Then shine with a dry sheet of newspaper or cloth.
  8. If you want to really get your carpet clean, sweep your carpet with a broom first.  This will get the ground in dirt loosened up .  Once done sweeping, then vacuum .  You will be pleased by the difference!
  9. Quickly freshen your garbage disposal by slicing up a ripe lemon and putting it down the drain.  Now, turn on the disposal and let it run .  Your disposal will now smell great .

Carpet or Art?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Made with many colors the persian area rug is heavy with intricate weaving, the many colors and motifs where you can get lost in the diversity. Hand woven in many countries around the world such as Iran, Pakistan, Turkey and Afghanistan and other orient countries.

The esthetic nature of the persian rug is highly beautiful because they are woven by hand. Persian rugs are a top choice to many people around our world and people will pay whatever price they have to beautify their home.

Persian carpet s created today are created using equipment that is automated, however you can still find the hand woven ones, they have more value of course so they cost much more than the machine created carpets. Carpet weaving is the number one craft in Iran . Carpets made in Iran are full of rich colors and created with very artistic patterns. You will find persian carpets around the world in famous buildings, mansions and museums. If you are the owner of a persian carpet you have a most precious possession.

Back in 2002 over $500 million dollars worth of hand woven carpets were exported from Iran, and in 2005 over $600 million. Excuding oil, the persian area rug was the No one export for Iran. In Iran over 5 million people are employed to produce these artistic carpets.

The most common type of material used in the production of the carpet would be wool, but they also use cotton in the production run as well for the foundation of the carpet used for cities and office buildings. The type of wool they use would be Manchester wool or Kork wool, and there are times when camel hair wool is used.

Another type of woven carpet is the silk carpet but they are less durable and more expensive. As time passes the silk carpet goes up in value. Because silk carpets don’t hold up very well they are purchased, and used as a wall decoration, instead of placing it on the floor. Silk carpets can be traced back to the sixteenth century.

The patterns you see in the Persian carpet have a name, they are called a motifs and the designs used in the carpet have special meanings, ususally referring to the area it was created in. However you can find multiple motifs in one carpet. The Boteh, Gul, Herati, Mina-Khani, Rosette and Shah Abbasi are the most common motifs.

The Persian carpet embodies the Culture and life style of the people of Iran, they are a valuable piece of art. Taking about ten months to create they become a dateless piece of art. The perfect Carpet for your living or dinning room.
