Using Vibrant Color in Your Home

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Have you ever walked into your home and just felt like something was lacking? Sometimes things just look dull, flat, and even a little boring. People often make the mistake of decorating their home in white, beige, brown, and other bland, monotonous colors. If you want your room to have personality and interest, you’re going to need to add some color! Color can really change the way you look at your home, whether it’s with little splashes or big bold accents.

Every home can have personality. You want the look to be vibrant enough to attract the eye. Colors that are lifeless, like beige and white, do little to spark any interest. Although you don’t necessarily need colors like bright red and passionate purple, a few great colors can really liven the place up. Here are some great colors tips to help you transform your home from drab to dramatic.

Transform the Walls
If you’re working within a budget, painting your walls is one of the biggest transformations you can make. Before you start, though, you need to figure out what colors you’re going to use in your furnishings and accents. After all, you want all the colors to complement or contrast one another. If springtime hues are your thing, consider using bright greens, peaches, yellows, and blues. Nothing adds cheeriness to a room like a botanical print hanging on a spring green wall.

No matter what colors you choose, try painting only one or two walls, leaving the rest white. This gives the room some real dimension and depth. The baseboards can either be painted a much deeper shade of the same color or a contrasting color.

Floors Are for More Than Just Walking!
When decorating their home, people often forget to include the flooring in the big picture. Whatever flooring you have—whether it’s wood floors, tile or carpet—can be dressed up. When topped with brightly colored accent rugs in strategic areas, wood or tile floors can really be livened up. Just be sure you’re choosing patterns that reflect the rest of your décor. Go with florals, plaids, abstracts, or geometrics—whatever suits your decorating style. You can use area rugs even if you only have carpeting. They can be placed in front of the couch or in the center of a furniture grouping where you often entertain.

What About Furnishings?
Here’s where you can really start to have fun. People are often afraid to mix and match patterns. However, if you have a floral sofa containing bright hues of green, yellow, and blue, it’s perfectly acceptable to add striped and plaid throw pillows containing the same colors. The resulting look will be stunning and will simply amaze you. You can use anything that will give you a big bold splash of color, from throws to tapestries. If you have solid-colored furniture, then use large throw pillows or blankets with loud patterns. You might even hang a brightly colored quilt over the back of the sofa.

The key to bringing energy to a dull look is color and pattern. Figure out what colors you love and use your imagination. All you need is some paint, a few area rugs, throw pillows, tapestries, and other accents.

With color, you can infuse your home with energy and personality without spending a whole lot of money. For very little cost, you can completely transform the look and atmosphere of a room. Ultimately, big splashes of color offer lots of bang for your buck. Go ahead and be daring, and you’ll ensure that you’ll never walk into a boring room in your home again.

Could You Build Your Hardwood floors Yourself?

Friday, July 8th, 2011

The straightforward answer is yes. Hardwood flooring installation may be carried out by anybody with the right tools, skills, and sufficient motivation. However, way too many enthusiastic do-it-yourselfers have discovered that installing hardwood floors requires more persistence than they imagined. For those people, hiring a professional installation technician is usually the best option.

Let us suppose, nonetheless, that you are inspired to handle the job by yourself. You realize there is plenty of work ahead of you, and you are eager to proceed ahead. In this post, we’ll provide a few of the challenges some other homeowners have confronted when setting up their hardwood floors. This isn’t meant to be an installation “how to” manual. Rather, the subsequent will provide you a fair understanding of the hard work (and frustration) included before starting up the work.

Tools Of The Trade

Previously, the wood planks were nailed or stapled manually. It was exhausting – even back breaking – work, even for smaller rooms covering under 200 square feet. That strategy has generally been abandoned for pneumatically-driven nailers and staplers; they are simpler to employ and require far less manual labor

Each may be rented at most home improvement shops.

You will also require nails or staples. The steel nails that were commonly used 20 years ago have been swapped out for cleat nails; these possess a somewhat hooked end that digs into the subfloor, and makes their hold more secure. Staples are fashioned with a liquid plastic resin on the end. This glue, when warmed up, has a comparable effect, securing the hardwood flooring to the subflooring with an adhesive trait.

Finally, you’ll need a floor mallet. One side is constructed of metal and the alternate side is constructed of rubber; this tool comes in especially useful for straightening uneven or bowed boards.

Thickness Of The Planks

If you are preparing to set up strip flooring, bear in mind the maximum breadth of the strips is 2 1/4 inches. Contrast this with planks that could have widths up to 8 inches. A lot of do-it-yourselfers fail to realize that installing strip flooring may well require a minimum of twice as much effort and time as plank flooring; even when armed with a pneumatically-driven nailer or stapler, the distinction in workloads is substantial.

Working With Troublesome Boards

One of the largest annoyances for property owners setting up their own hardwood flooring is that the boards are often blemished. It is well worth noting that wooden strips and planks aren’t designed equal. A few are milled much better than others. The ones that are milled badly may turn up turned or bowed, making them difficult to work with. Even with a mallet to help align them, establishing the planks straight against each other is difficult.

Predictably, this problem tends to occur most often with cheap boards; this is a compelling reason to steer clear of being enticed exclusively by price. You might save a couple of bucks in advance, but might be setting the stage for lots of frustration in the future.

Think About The Area’s Arrangement

The simplest room in which to set up hardwood flooring is one with a square layout. In such rooms, it is fairly easy to make certain the installation has a symmetrical physical appearance. The problem is, lots of areas will have odd designs that complicate the installment. For instance, the strips and planks might run into an surrounding hallway or another space. Even a “modest” alignment concern may lead to the flooring to appear off-balanced as it runs through the additional areas.

Another obstacle is that the room in which you’re installing the hardwood floors may have moldings all around the perimeter. This may be difficult, dependent on the format of the moldings (t-moldings might be specifically troublesome). You’ll need to avoid chipping the surface, or splitting them with the pneumatic nailer or stapler.

To summarize, it is possible to install your own wood floors and do a professional job. But it involves a lot of work. Collect the necessary resources, make investments in high-quality supplies, and be prepared for unforeseen difficulties on the way.

The Benefits Of Installing Water Underfloor Heating

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

My family are one happy family as I write this article. Why? Well our house has a new and cosy feel to it ever since I employed an underfloor heating company to install water underfloor heating into our property. This has had many benefits as I will be explaining within this article.

The idea for this project came after visiting one of my wife’s friends for a dinner party. My wife is called Pam and her friend who hosted the dinner party is called Sue. I have to say that Sue and her family are rather flush with money or so it would seem. I suppose all of their gadgets could be on credit but I somehow doubt it. Sue and her husband Pete proudly showed their guests, including myself and Pam, around their house.

They had underfloor heating installed in a couple of the rooms of their house and I must admit that I was smitten and perhaps rather jealous in an instant. I just presumed that this was one of those luxuries that were only available and affordable for people such as Sue and Pete.

On the way home I found that Pam had also been rather taken by the flooring so much so that it was obvious that she really wanted to have it in our house.

For her 50th birthday I decided to “live a little” and thought that I would arrange, as one of her presents, to have the water underfloor heating systems installed in our house. To be fair it was not as expensive as I thought that it would be as I managed to gain a good deal online.

Pam was very happy with her present as was our kids. We have the flooring in our bathroom and my youngest son now loves to have a bath or shower where beforehand it was a major struggle to get him in there etc. This flooring also makes the whole house feel that much warmer and cosier and a local estate agent has commented that it has likely to have increased the value of the house. Plus it has meant that the wife loves me more than ever lol.
